Sylvia L. Asa, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P.(C), F.C.A.P.
Sylvia Asa, MD, PhD is the Pathologist-in-Chief at the University Health Network and Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. She received her medical and post-doctorate degrees from the University of Toronto and completed her internship in internal medicine at Toronto General Hospital and the University of Toronto. She received her residency training in pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital and the Toronto General Hospital, all affiliated with the University of Toronto. She subsequently was a research fellow in the Department of Pathology at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto.
Peter Banks, M.D.
Dr. Banks is currently the Director of Hematopathology at Carolinas Medical Center in North Carolina, and has been practicing, teaching, and publishing extensively for over 30 years. He has twice been recognized by The Best Doctors in America, and twice won Teacher of the Year honors (in pathology) at the Mayo Clinic. His current academic appointment is as Adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he continues to actively participate in resident education. He has also held leadership positions at many influential professional organizations, including the Society for Hematopathology (President 1996-1998), and the North Carolina Society of Pathologists (President-Elect).
Richard A. Bender, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Dr. Bender is the Chief Medical Officer and VP for Agendia B.V, a leader in genomic testing for cancer. Dr. Bender received his MD degree from the UCLA School of Medicine followed by specialty training in Internal Medicine at UCLA-Harbor General Hospital. He then spent the next 6 years at the National Cancer Institute receiving his subspecialty training in hematology and medical oncology and as a senior investigator in the Medicine Branch doing laboratory and clinical research. He then moved to Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation where he spent an additional 4 years dividing his time between laboratory research in folate transport and clinical practice. In 1982, he began a 2-decade career at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, helping to develop their oncology program into one of the busiest in the western US. In addition, Dr. Bender served on the executive board of the San Diego Hospice and American Cancer Society and served as a clinical instructor at the UC, San Diego School of Medicine during this period. He was also a Senior Director in the oncology division of Johnson and Johnson, and the medical director for hematology and oncology for Quest Diagnostics, a position he held for almost 6 years. He continues to teach at the UC, Irvine School of Medicine and to co-edit Anti-Cancer Drugs, an international oncology journal, as well at to serve as an expert reviewer in oncology for the Medical Board of California. Dr. Bender is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles and numerous book chapters on topics including malignant lymphoma, pancreatic cancer and the clinical pharmacology of Vinca alkaloids.
Sarah Dry, M.D.
Dr. Dry is the Director of the Translational Pathology Core Laboratory and Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, as well as the Co-Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine’s Pathways Pathology Center in the Departments of Medical and Molecular Pharmacology and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA. She received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, was a resident in anatomic and clinical pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and completed her GI Pathology Fellowship training at UCLA Department of Pathology. Her clinical expertise and research focus are in the fields of gastrointestinal and bone/soft tissue pathology. Dr. Dry has served as an advisor to biorepository programs at several academic centers throughout the United States.
Eric Glassy, M.D.
Dr. Glassy, who trained as a pathologist, is currently Information Systems Director and New Media Consultant at Pathology Inc. and Laboratory Director at Little Company of Mary Hospital in San Pedro, CA. Previously, Dr. Glassy has practiced pathology and directed laboratories throughout California, while also holding adjunct faculty positions at CSU Fullerton. Dr. Glassy is a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society and has won numerous pathology awards. He has chaired many hospital committees as well as national committees for the College of American Pathologists. He has edited, written and illustrated several medical textbooks and developed software programs such as ePathComposer, ePathBanker, ePathFish, and PathTrac, for pathology reporting, outreach, and practice management. He also holds a green belt in Six Sigma.
Lewis Hassell, M.D.
Dr. Hassell is currently Director of Anatomic Pathology and holds the Professor of Excellence chair in the Department of Pathology, Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. He previously practiced pathology with Dahl Chase Pathology Associates in Maine, and in Northern California. He received his pathology training at Massachusetts General Hospital and his medical degree from the University of Utah. He has been a frequent visitor and consultant to colleagues in Vietnam and helped to facilitate humanitarian and medical development projects there for 20 years. He is active in the CAP and a member of several committees. He serves as a board member for the American Pathology Foundation and on the education committee. His research interests include process improvements, laboratory management, pathology education, cytopathology, and quality improvements, as well as development of pathology in resource poor environments.
Paul Raslavicus, M.D.
Dr. Raslavicus is the current Secretary-Treasurer of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Raslavicus has been deeply involved with the activities of the CAP for over two decades. He served as the chair of its Council on Government and Professional Affairs and its Information Services Committee. Within the latter he assessed the future of pathology informatics, digital pathology imaging, and the development of a pathology DICOM standard. Dr. Raslavicus was the College President from 2001-2003, and the College honored him as Pathologist of the Year in 2004.
Mohamed Salama, M.D.
Dr. Salama is the assistant medical director of the hematopathology at the Associated Regional University Pathologists (ARUP) national reference laboratory and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Salama received his MD from Cairo University and completed a surgical pathology fellowship at Stanford University followed by a hematopathology fellowship at the University of New Mexico. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as hematopathology. His areas of interest span all aspects of hematopathology, including morphology and specialized studies of bone marrow and lymph nodes.
John Spinosa, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Spinosa is a partner at Laboratory Diagnostics Medical Group, a pathology group serving San Diego area hospitals. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Spinosa has been an active leader within the hospitals he covers. He has over 10 years experience chairing pathology departments, was Medical Director at Scripps East County from 1997-2000, and is currently the Chief of Staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Dr. Spinosa also serves as the medical director at numerous San Diego area reference laboratories. Between 1994 and 2003, Dr. Spinosa served on the CAP Informatics Committee, was the CAP voting representative at HL7, and represented the CAP on the ANSI Health Information Standards Board.
